Understanding 2025 Property Taxes
Montana homeowners will soon (if you have not already) receive updated property valuation notices, which will be used to calculate this fall’s property tax bills. It’s important to review these carefully. Once mailed, you’ll have 30 days to appeal if you believe the valuation is inaccurate. Most homeowners can expect increases, as property values across the state rose significantly between 2022 and 2024.
In past years, residential properties were typically taxed at 1.35% of their assessed market value. However, a new tax-relief package passed this year introduces tiered rates aimed at reducing the taxable value for modest, owner-occupied homes—shifting more of the tax burden to other property types. The new second-home tax, which will apply higher rates to non-primary residences, won’t take effect until next year (see article below for more).
Property tax bills will be mailed out in October, with payments due in two installments: one at the end of November and the other at the end of May. Reviewing your notice and understanding the changes now will help you prepare—and give you the chance to appeal within the 30-day window if needed.
